The following are instructions for selecting a photographer...worth the read!

Step1:
Experience. If you are going to be shelling out money for a wedding photographer, then you better make certain that they have actually taken photos for weddings before. (believe me, I have seen amateurs use other photographers' photos) Also, many times, companies will show you albums from photographers, their best photographers. Ask to see an album by the photographer that will actually be shooting your wedding. The quality could be vastly different.
Step2:
It's also a good idea to meet with the photographer before the wedding. You may really love all the options that a particular company has to offer, but the photographer's personality may not mesh with yours. You should feel comfortable with the photographer...if you don't, then neither will your guests, and it just isn't worth the hassle in the long run. I always insist on meeting my clients.
Step3:
If you would like some old-fashioned black and white photos, be sure the photographer does their own conversion work. P.S. if the photographer is not using digital equipment at this point...don't even bother with them.
Step4:
Another item to keep in mind is the price. How much are you willing to spend? If you find a company that you really love, but they want more money, are you willing to pay it?

Step5:
Find out how the finances are handled. Can you only purchase your photos in a package format? Or can you pick and choose what you want? Do you get to keep all the proofs? How much is the copyright for the photos? Make sure you know exactly what's included for the price you're paying.

Step6:
References are always a plus. If they have had other satisfied customers, you are much more likely to also be happy with them.

Step7:
Find out about refunds / cancellation policies. Also ask about traffic. What happens if the photographer is late showing up? Will you still have to pay the full price? This is very important and cannot be overlooked. Then ask me about my very unique policy regarding your wedding..I personally haven't ever heard of it before from another company.

Step 8:
Compare value...apples to apples. Where are the wedding albums made? How many hours will the photographer be working? Are the prints good quality? What equipment does the photographer own? Do they have backup plans?
My most critical piece of advice....
Do not base your decision about such an important part of your wedding on price alone.
